The Group Members - DEBU

WHAT, WHO & WHY DEBU?
After having already come to know DEBU, we hope people will begin to understand what they are, who they are and why they do what they are doing. But after that, one needs to forget it all because DEBU isn't really anything, nor anybody and there is simply no reason to ask about them. They have come from Him and are in the process of returning to Him. What should be remembered, however, is the message they bring. If their music makes you feel good, accepting their message will carry you even further. If visiting them gives you a sense of tranquility, this is the result of the real Sufi brotherhood that exists among them. This is not however the end but rather the beginning.

Layla

Layla Wafiyah
Born on:
Dec 31, 1969
Place of Birth:
Washington, USA
Position:
harp, kanoon, tambourine & vocalistLayla Wafiyah is one of the members of the original group Dust on the Road in the United States and is one of the main performers in DEBU who performs at all of their concerts. She has branched out in the last year beginning to play the kanun which is an instrument similar to the zither and used in both Arabic and Turkish music. Using the skill she has already acquired with the harp she has been able to pick up playing the kanun quite rapidly. Although she is not using the the kanun in performances yet, that is probably going to change very soon. This will add another dimension to the unique sound of the band.

Husniah

Fatimah Husniah
Born on:
Nov 08, 1987
Place of Birth:
Texas, USA
Position:
bağlama (saz), violin

While the other members of the group are busy studying other instruments, this young woman of Italian-Chinese decent remains fully concentrated on perfecting her knowledge of this instrument. Although she is already able to play a number of other instruments quite well, she has been zeroing in on the bağlama or saz as it is sometimes called.

Daood

Daood Abdullah
Born on:
Sep 28, 1988
Place of Birth:
Texas, USA
Position:
drummerDaood is in the process of flux and transformation at the present time. He's been studying drum here in Jakarta at the Farabi School of Music of well-known Indonesian international jazz musician, Dwiki Dharmawan. He is also becoming a promising guitarist with varied interests ranging from flamenco to blues. He's known to be a somewhat quiet person with a serious side to him. He enjoys soccer and very often goes out and plays some in the morning with Mustafa and some of the other members of the family.

Najmah

Najmah Hakimah
Born on:
Dec 31, 1969
Place of Birth:
Oklahoma, USA
Position:
santoor & violin, vocal instructor, composerNajmah is one of the original members of the earlier group Dust on the Road. DEBU owes a great debt of gratitude to her and to her knowledge of music and patience. She carried the group through its initial stages and patiently taught them the basics of music theory. During the process she herself has become a very good santoor player with her instrument becoming one of the identifying characteristics of DEBU's unique sound. She also spends a good amount of time learning to play the concertina.

Besides Mustafa, she is the other composers for DEBU. Her music is very distinct and beautiful, replete with subtle and lyrical harmonies and nuances.
She is currently working on a madrigal album featuring poetry in the form of English sonnets by Shaykh Fattaah. Insha' Allah that album will be out some time after the beginning of next year. She is a real Sufi and loves every minute with DEBU.

Najib

Najib
Shakur Ali
Born on:
Feb 07, 1972
Place of Birth:
Washington DC, USA
Position:
percussion, band manager

You can't speak about DEBU without mentioning the name Najib. He arranges all of the performances of the group in addition to any other administrative tasks that occur with a group like this. He is the designer of the DEBU websites having been a full-time computer consultant before the group's establishment. He usually handles most interviews along with his wife Naseem and Mustafa. He always get an applause whenever performing with many recognizing him from his many interviews. He is very proficient in Indonesian and very popular with Indonesian fans.
In addition to that he still finds time to practice the viola.

Naimah

Naimah Mahmoud
Born on:
Jan 29, 1980
Place of Birth:
Texas, USA
Position:
mandolin, percussion, oud

In the last year Naimah has become a very important member of the group performing in most of the public engagements. She has a real musical talent that has been slowly developing for some time, but that recently has really taken off. She is someone to keep an eye on, she undoubtedly has all the requirements of being a very accomplished musician.

Wahab

Abdul Wahab
Born on:
Jun 22, 1986
Place of Birth:
Bogor, Indonesia
Position:
percussion, marawis

Wahab, Indonesian from Jakarta, started out as a very enthusiastic fan of DEBU who used to come to the daily practices every day until he was finally asked to join in. He is a very good percussionist knowing many Indonesian rhythms and as a result he has been able to make his own unique contribution to the group's music. He is extremely good natured and an asset to DEBU.

Shakurah

Shakurah Yasirah
Born on:
Jun 02, 1981
Place of Birth:
Michigan, USA
Position:
violinist, saz

Shakurah is the main violinist in the group. She has always played an important role in the recording aspects of the music, spending many hours in the studio. She also teaches the other violinists as well as play the oud and mandolin. She leads a new yet un-named group within DEBU of women members which are preparing to do some recording on their own. She successfully balances all of this activity with being a full-time mother of two very active children who spend a lot of time with their mother wherever she may be.

When the original group Dust on the Road was formed she was there, but she was just a little girl.

Saleem

Muhammad Saleem
Born on:
Dec 15, 1986
Place of Birth:
Oregon, USA
Position:
Flutes, percussion, singer

Saleem and Mustafa are two sides of the same coin. They both complement each other. They spend much time together in the studio recording. Saleem is a natural-born musician who can play any wind instrument, but who also plays classical guitar and all of the percussion instruments used by the group. He also fills in on the bass whenever the necessity arises. He is one of the most loved members of DEBU. He is fluent in Indonesian and in his spare time he studies Arabic. He also occasionally does some composing and arranging for DEBU and we expect to hear more from him in the future.

Naseem

Naseem Nahid DeVoe
Born on:
Oct 04, 1976
Place of Birth:
Washington, USA
Position:
percussion, spokesperson, costume cordinatorNaseem could be considered one of the busiest members of DEBU. She handles many different aspects of the performances of the group. She also answers fan mail which in itself is no small task.

She takes a very active part in the preparation for performances. She designs and coordinates costumes and fashion for the group.

She is also a mid-wife and teaches English and calligraphy classes for children. She routinely interacts with fans and those interested in DEBU. Naseem on MySpace.

Mustafa

Kumayl Mustafa Daood
Born on:
Jul 09, 1981
Place of Birth:
Oregon, USA
Position:
lead vocal, oud, violin, composer & arranger

Mustafa is DEBU, DEBU is Mustafa. He is the main driving force behind the group. During concerts he commands the show. He quickly establishes a rapport with the audience and usually holds them in his hand spell-bound until the end. He is fluent in Indonesian and Indonesian audiences love him. He sings and in between songs he explains the poetry that he sings.
Currently he is busy putting the finishing touches on a new recording studio owned by Asmaraloka Marketing that will be the home of all of DEBU's future recordings in Jakarta. He has personally taken charge of its construction and design. This will enable the group to branch out and carry out many of the projects that they have wanted to do for a long time. You will definitely be hearing more about this in the future, insha' Allah. He divides his time between this and the groups daily rehearsals. He is also proficient in Arabic and Spanish and has recently begun a serious study of Chinese.
He is quite an athlete enjoying martial arts and soccer among other things. Needless to say, he leads a very active life.
